Regardless of the recipe, you can always bet that a fresh ingredient is better than its dried or frozen counterpart. Use fresh ingredients as often as you can; they offer more flavor and tend to be less expensive as well.

A wooden cutting board requires a certain amount of care. Heat, dryness, and excess moisture can cause a wooden cutting board to warp and split. A wooden cutting board will be ruined if it is placed into water. Oiling the wood regularly with an oil made for this purpose can help restore the board to good condition. Be sure to dry it off completely before using.

Test a small sample of your seasoned meats prior to cooking the full dish. Particularly meats such as ground beef will need to be seasoned carefully. Never cook all of your meat immediately after it has been seasoned. Cook a small, seasoned patty and taste the result. You are then able to decide whether to cook the rest of the meat that way, or adjust your seasoning accordingly.

This way, you have fruits that stay fresh throughout the year. You’ll also be able to enjoy fruits out of season when the mood strikes you.

When preparing mashed potatoes, mix the potatoes using hot, non-boiling water prior to mashing them. The mashed potatoes will be lighter and fluffier than if you would have used cold milk in them instead. Lumpy, thick mashed potatoes are not delectable, as you should avoid this condition at all costs.

When you barbecue, get your grill ready before you start. It takes approximately 30 minutes for the grill to heat to the proper temperature for cooking. The coals need to be around medium heat and covered in ash. You will get the best grilling results at this temperature.

You can change the flavors of the food you cook by changing up the spice blends that you are using. When you use a new spice or a new sauce to cook with you may find that dishes taste different. You might not think about it, but an easy and interesting way to find unusual spices and sauces would be to shop at any foreign food stores available in your town.

Layer salads properly when you are preparing a salad in advance. Items like tomatoes, which are juicy, should be on the bottom, while other ingredients that may be more delicate and prone to wilting should go on top.

Are you partial to using fresh basil in your cooking? Place a few fresh sprouts in a glass. Make sure the basil’s stems are covered in water. The basil can remain fresh for several days if it is placed in indirect sunlight. Remember to refresh the water from time to time, and you will notice that the basil starts to grow roots. Trim your basil plants once in awhile to promote more growth, and enjoy your fresh basil for quite a long time.

Preparing foods with brine can add an interesting flavor to your cooking. Soaking turkey, chicken, duck or goose in a brine for an hour prior to prep can help accentuate its flavors.

Apples are used in cooking mostly during the fall, but you must make sure they are properly kept so that they do not rot. Warm, dry air can cause apples to rot, so keep your excess stock for cooking and eating in plastic bags, and place them where they will stay cool and moist, such as the basement or refrigerator. Watch them, because it will only take one rotten apple to ruin the others.

Fix your pie crust! Cracks will appear if you overwork your dough. Put a bit of cold water on each crack, then move your finger over the cracked dough. If there is cracking on the top pie crust, use some milk on a brush and sprinkle with coarse grind sugar. After baking, the crust will have a beautiful glaze that will hide any cracks.

People often add too much salt in their recipes without realizing it until it’s too late, but do not worry. There is a way to fix this! Take two raw potatoes, peel and chop them, and add them to the sauce to simmer for a quarter hour. The potatoes will absorb the extra salt that is in the dish. If your dish is based in tomatoes, you can put in additional tomatoes for the purpose of diluting the excessive salt.

Obtaining skills in the kitchen and utilizing them can be just as enjoyable as eating. These fabulous tips will broaden your cooking knowledge and help you tap into your creativity as you cook. You’ll become a better and better cook, and soon, people will always be asking to try some of your home cooking.
