New Zealanders are good-hearted people known for their ingenuity which shows in the way Kiwis around the world go about with their work and other aspects of their lives. But good employees are not the only exports New Zealand can take pride in. A certain brand of shoe polish doesn’t count among the country’s popular products since it originated from Australia and not from New Zealand. One thing New Zealanders can truly be proud of that they are joyously sharing to the rest of the world is Lemon And Paeroa.

One of the most popular soft drinks in New Zealand, Lemon And Paeroa or simply L&P, is slowly making a name for itself in other places. In fact, the company’s bold claim of their drink being “World famous in New Zealand” holds some truth to it. Though their slogan takes a funny jab at itself, it clearly indicates that it is indeed popular in the country. Another testament to its fame is the fact that the world famous soft drink giant Coca-Cola now manufactures L&P.Lemon And Paeroa

L&P originated from the town of Paeroa. As the name suggests, it also has something to do with lemon. As a matter of fact, the soft drink is made from lemon and mineral water gathered from this New Zealand town. It all started out when Arthur Wohlman analyzed the mineral water in Paeroa and discovered that it contains magnesium bicarbonate with a 1040 mg per liter concentration. Because of this knowledge, Robert Fewell and Frank Brinkler bought the property where the mineral spring is. They started bottling and selling the water through their Paeroa Natural Mineral Water Company.

In 1915, Menzies and Company entered the fray and bought the company. By the 1940s, the new owners began manufacturing and marketing two new poducts – Lemon and Paeroa and Paeroa and Lemon. A merger between Menzies and Co and CL Innes took place in 1963. Another change in ownership happened in the 70s when Oasis Industries took over. As mentioned, Coca-Cola now has the rights to produce and sell the drink.
New Zealand kids of the 80s and early 90s may recall hearing a cover song of the 1963 hit (Love is Like A) Heat Wave by the Motown group Martha and the Vandellas. That song version was the result of a collaboration of a number of singers from New Zealand who lent their musical talents to help promote the L&P.
